6 Degrees of Geekery

Wanna try a new game? Here's the basic rundown:

As geeks we're great with trivia because we retain useless information most general people don't give too much thought to. 6 Degrees of Geekery is a trivia game, but it's like Shout About Movies (DVD trivia game where there is no game board and all of the answers are just shouted out). It's kind of like 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but instead of linking actors together to get to Kevin Bacon we do things a bit differently.

Here's how to play:

Watch any movie and see how many geek connections you can make from that movie with the actors and actresses in it.
Example: The Men Who Stare at Goats

Ewan McGregor was Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episodes I-IIII
Jeff Bridges was Obadiah Stane in Iron Man
Kevin Spacey was Lex Luthor in Superman Returns
George Clooney was (technically) Batman in Batman in Robin

Of course you can do it with a single actor to see how close they are to a geek connection.
Example: The Relic

The Relic stars Tom Sizemore who was also in Heart and Souls with Robert Downey Jr who of course was Iron Man.

It's a great way to turn anything geeky and also show how much geek culture has seeped even more into pop culture. Course there are instances where even geek movies have more geek references in it than just what the movie itself is about. Not sure what I'm talking about? Look at The Hobbit. 2 examples are that it features both main characters from Sherlock and a former Doctor Who.

Keep in mind that this works for TV shows too. In fact I was watching season 2 of CSI and back to back episodes had geek connections. One featured Zachary Quinto (Star Trek and Heroes) and the next had Mark Sheppard (Badger on Firefly). Granted there are tons of other examples, but I don't want to take away anyone's fun.

Put picture collages together to show how many geek connections a movie or show has. Like this one I did for The Prestige.

Give it a whirl and share what you come up with.
